Dark chocolate has grown in popularity, and consumption due to it’s healthy components.

Chocolate and particularly dark chocolate have seen a recent rise in popularity, as well as consumption numbers. It seems that what is in dark chocolate is not only delicious, but also very healthy, and has fueled this growth.

Origins of Dark Chocolate

The origins of dark chocolate are cacao pods from the cacao tree in tropical climates.

The cacao tree, and the cacao pods are where chocolate comes from.  These cacao trees are found in tropical climates. There are different types and varieties of cacao that produce different types of chocolate.

In the case of dark chocolate, in order to be considered dark chocolate, the product must contain at least 18% and up to 99% chocolate liquor.

Dark chocolate is produced from the part of the cacao bean that is non fat. There must also be no milk solids added.
Industry and government standards of what chocolate products may be deemed dark chocolate may vary depending on the specific market and country.

The United States, and Europe for instance, require a minimum of 35% chocolate liquor, while Canada has only a minimum 18% chocolate liquor requirement for it to qualify as dark chocolate.

The higher the chocolate liquor content, the more bitter the product will be. Dark chocolate tends to have a cocoa solids content of between 30% and 80%.

Although not necessarily mandated, the suggested least amount of cocoa beans to be included in healthy dark chocolate, for it to be considered healthy dark chocolate is 70%.  The fermentation, and alkalinization process of the cacao will determine the amount of flavanols that are left in the end product.

In order to ensure that you are getting the optimum healthy benefits from the dark chocolate your best bet is to purchase organic, unprocessed cacao.

You can locate unprocessed cacao in various forms such as the bean or the seed, powder, nibs, or cacao butter which is from the fat of the bean.

  1. I love chocolate and eat it every day. I’ve always prefered dark to milk chocolate and never realised some of the benefits you mentioned, including health hair and nails. Maybe I won’t feel so guilty about eating it now 🙂

  2. I really like the information given here. There are a lot of things about chocolate that I never knew. When you think of chocolate, you automatically think about the processed high sugar content chocolate you find in candy, and we know that all of the sugar isn’t good for us. The fact that natural chocolate helps with other health issues is a good thing though.
