Do I Need to Take Supplements?

You may have wondered, as I have, if enough nutrition can be had from the food you eat. If so, it may not be necessary to take supplements.  At one time it was true that enough nutrition could be extracted from our food. This was possible some 100 years ago.

People used to grow their own food, raise their own livestock, and/or hunt and gather for their subsistence. A mass migration from the country to the cities brought about a need to adulterate and preserve food in order to transport and maintain it.

In the last 90-100 years, we have begun to process, refine, add chemicals, preservatives, and other non food ingredients to our food to meet the demands of those that could no longer create their own food.

In addition it was determined that by adding pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals to the crops that the yields could increase. This practice, and over farming led to a depletion of soil minerals which rendered much of the crops devoid of their vitamins and minerals.

Add to this scenario that relatively recent addition of GMO, or genetically modified crops, and our food has become woefully deficient in nutrtitional value.

Even the livestock, cattle, pigs, and chickens have been exploited. It was discovered that keeping the animals penned up,adding hormones to their feed, and injecting anti biotics into them that they could grow fatter, and fewer animals would be lost to diseases. This, of course, brings higher prices at the market, and makes more money for the farmers/ranchers.

It is possible now to buy organic, and free range meat. However, much of the organic produce has been irrigated by chemical laden tap or ‘city’ water which makes it far less wholesome, and is normally considerably more expensive than the standard produce.

Ideally you want to irrigate by dry farming (rainwater only) or with well water.

Another major negative to our food is our obsession with eating cooked food. We were engineered to eat raw food. Cooking food destroys most if not all of the nutrition positive ingredients in the food rendering it, at best neutral. (won’t do us any good, but may not do us any harm)

Frying our food in oil, yes, any oil is very unhealthy. Heating oil changes it’s molecular structure, and brings it from something possibly good for us, to something quite bad for us. These bad oils, and other oils that are ubiquitous in our food, are blamed for much of the skin cancer that is so prevalent in our society today.

I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that we are not getting anywhere near the nutrition we need from our food. In fact, it is safe to also say that most of the food we eat will do us more harm than good.

Does Synthetic or Natural Vitamins Matter? 

Since we are not getting near enough nutrition from our food, taking supplements has become more important than ever for us.  But, which supplements should I take? The first thing we need to understand about supplements is that they are not all created equally.

A study from the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association found that 97% of vitamin and mineral supplements  being offered in so called health food stores are ineffective, toxic or both. Further studies have indicated that low quality supplements can and have lead to hormone imbalances, high blood pressure, liver failure, and even the dreaded heart attacks.

Another supplement study found that 60% of supplements analyzed for their active ingredients simply did not contain what was described on the label. In another random sample of 44 herbal supplements 33% were found to contain no trace of the plant that was advertised on the exterior of the bottle.

Over 95% of vitamins for sale today are synthetic (man made). That means that only less than 5% of vitamins come from natural sources. And, as I stated earlier, about one third of vitamins that call themselves natural vitamins are misrepresented, and devoid of any nutritional value.

Synthetic vitamins are made to copy natural or real vitamins. Synthetic vitamins are lacking in co-factors, enzymes, and other transporters that natural vitamins have. They are normally either stored by the body in a nonusable form, or excreted.

These so-called vitamins are also often loaded up with chemicals, fillers, glues, talc, and other toxic tagalongs to ensure that not only will you get very little if any benefit, but could well cause you added health problems with their continued use.

To sum it up, if you walk into a vitamin store today, or go online to buy vitamins, your odds of purchasing anything that could do you good without doing you any harm is about one in a hundred. That’s 1%.

That figure may be a bit higher if you figure in the placebo effect. The placebo effect is defined as, if you believe that something will help you, it will.

A good example of the placebo effect is when we have the flu virus, the allopathic doctor will usually prescribe an anti-biotic to combat it. In a test tube, an anti-biotic is useless against a virus. Yet, it often works when taken because the belief is there.

We know that the natural form is clearly superior than the synthetic form of vitamins. But if these vitamin manufacturers/companies can pretty much put anything in the bottle, how do I know it is legitimate?

Earthing or grounding is a relatively new natural health phenomena that has been around as long as men and women have walked on the earth.

Let me explain this contradictory statement. Since the advent of shoes or footwear, humans have no longer been in contact with the earth when they walk, unless of course they go barefoot.

It was not until approximately 15 years ago that it was discovered that the earth provides electrons or anti-oxidants when in direct contact  or grounding contact with it.

This amazing discovery, or rediscovery if you will, can have a profoundly positive effect on your health and well being.

I will describe what earthing and grounding is, how it works, how you benefit from earthing and grounding, the best ways to take advantage of it, and what earthing products are available.

What is Earthing and Grounding

Earthing or grounding is described as a fast growing activity that allows you to tap into the earth’s natural energy, in order to improve health and wellness.

The main method used in earthing is to walk barefoot on the earth or ground surface for a period of time.  Earthing is the process of absorbing the earth’s free flowing electrons into and through your body.

This is normally accomplished by simply walking barefoot for at least 5 minutes at a time, touching the earth with your hands also for at least 5 minutes at a time, or by using a sleeping sheet while sleeping, or a grounding mat while sitting or standing indoors.

Due to the ubiquitous diseases and chronic inflammation of today, grounding yourself to the earth, as well as from indoors can provide a simple, natural road to less pain, better overall health, deeper sleep, and increased energy.

 

How Earthing and Grounding Work

Earthing and grounding works by tapping into the free flow of electrons from the earth. Our ancestors walked barefoot or used animal skins for their feet providing direct contact with the earth.

Since the invention of synthetic footwear, we have lost the direct contact with the earth, and, as a result, unknowingly, we have also lost the earth’s limitless array of health benefits.

You don’t need to spend 10-12 hours a day running around barefoot to benefit from earthing and grounding. It is thought that any amount of time in direct contact with the earth will provide you with positive results. The more time you spend at it, however, the better.

This process of ridding your body of free radicals by adding anti oxidants has a profoundly positive effect on your health.

Earthing and grounding can also be achieved indoors with the use of a special grounding sheet that can be placed on a bed or other surface used for sleeping.

This special designed sheet has a connected wire that is plugged into the grounding receptacle of a three pronged electrical wall outlet or other three pronged electrical outlet such as an  electrical strip.

This connection runs through to the outside to the grounding rod that is inserted into the ground.  This connection achieves the same effect as grounding oneself with their barefeet or hands to the earth.

Gardening will have you touching the earth a good deal. Doing so will allow you to take advantage of the earth’s energy, assuming of course you don’t wear gloves or shoes the entire time.

If you are a golfer, play a hole or two a round barefoot. Your playing partners may think you a bit strange by doing so, but once you explain why you are doing it, don’t be surprised if they join right in with you.

Use your imagination. If you take your dog or your kids to the park, spend part of the time walking barefoot (but watch out for those tootsie rolls). Even at work, if you have an outdoor area that you can take breaks, or lunch, you can do some earthing.

Even touching trees, bushes, and plants will give you the earthing effect. (Be sure you know what you are touching, however) If you have a beach near your home, you have an ideal way to connect with the earth. No wonder beaches are so popular.

Of course some of us live in areas that going outdoors to connect with the earth is impractical for at least several months of the year.

If you suffer from insomnia, you are not alone. There are more than 3 million new, reported cased of insomnia each year in the United States alone.  These are just the reported cases. The actual number is likely much higher. It is estimated that some 35 million Americans suffer from chronic insomnia.

Insomnia, also known as sleeplessness, is a sleep disorder where people experience difficulty sleeping. They may have trouble getting off to sleep, or staying asleep as long as needed or desired. Also, waking early, and not being able to get back to sleep is a common insomnia complaint.

Those with insomnia, also called insomniacs, may express dissatisfaction with their sleep, and usually have these symptoms: low energy levels, fatigue, concentration difficulties, moodiness, feeling sleepy during the day, anxiety, stress, and performance issues at work or school.

I will explain why sleep is so important to your health, what causes insomnia, the best ways to treat, and overcome insomnia, and the best natural products available to treat, and help eliminate insomnia. (scroll to bottom)

Why we need sleep

We need a minimum of 5 straight, uninterrupted hours of sleep per night. This means not getting up to go to the bathroom, or to let the cat out or in, to get a snack, or for any other reason. Ideally we need 7 to 8 hours of total sleep per night.

Without 5 straight uninterrupted hours of sleep, we make less than 30% of the adrenaline needed to provide energy for us during the day.  Many of us turn to coffee to provide the needed boost. Coffee, unfortunately can flog the adrenal glands, compounding the issue of insomnia.

As adults, we need 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night in order to to repair our bodily tissue, grow muscle, and for hormone synthesis. Sleep is also needed in order to help our brains to process, and store information.

The strength of our immune systems are also dependent on adequate sleep. Without adequate sleep we are more prone to invasion of viruses, and other infections.

What Causes Insomnia

There are many causes of insomnia. One of the most common, and most overlooked causes is with the gallbladder.  In TCM, Traditional Chinese Medicine, sleep and the gallbladder go hand in hand. Many times, a simple gallbladder detox, or cleanse can alleviate sleep problems.

Gallbladder issues are normally due to a diet of processed foods, refined foods, fried foods, and fatty meats. Switching to a more raw, organic, plant based diet can help the entire body going forward.

Other insomnia causes are:

  • Pain-inflammation
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Hormonal Imbalance – may be liver related
  • Poor Digestion – Eating too late at night prior to sleeping
  • Caffeine – Drinking caffeine drinks like coffee too late in the day
  • Urination frequency – can be caused by prostate problems in men
  • Sleep apnea – breathing issues while sleeping
  • Circadian Rythym Disruption – Sleep/Wake cycles(often initiated by travel or a change in schedule)
  • Prescription, and Over the Counter Medications, and their side effects.

Insomnia can be caused by a single factor, or a combination of factors.

Stop the Behaviors that Cause Insomnia

There are many ways to treat, and overcome insomnia. You should look for and address the behaviors that may be causing the problem.  The easiest, and simplest solutions are to eliminate the bad habits or behaviors that may be at the heart of the problem. For instance, if you eat late at night, you should stop. Food should not be eaten past 7 p.m. in the evening.

Your body needs to fully digest any food before it will allow you to sleep. To compound the problem, most people have diminshed levels of HCL, hydrochloric acid. These levels decrease as we age. Lower levels of HCL make it more difficult to fully digest food.

If you find that you have to get up during the night to urinate, and you have eliminated the possibility of a prostate problem, you should also limit the amount of water or other beverage that you drink late at night.  Although I am a big proponent of staying hydrated, if you have trouble sleeping, you should eliminate drinks of any kind after 7 p.m.

Many people, myself included, enjoy drinking coffee during the day. The caffeine in coffee is a stimulant, and if taken too late in the day, may make it difficult to go off to sleep at night. Ideally, you don’t want to ingest caffeine past noon during the day.  Coffee is also a diuretic which can increase the frequency of urination.

You may be able to go later in the day before stopping the caffeine, but I notice that if I drink coffee past 2 p.m., some nights it is more difficult for me to get to sleep.

Some medications are designed to help you sleep, others like amphetamines, have the opposite effect. I don’t recommend taking any drugs, prescribed or otherwise, unless necessary. Once they have served their purpose to help you past whatever traumatic, or acute issue you were experiencing, it is better to stop.

All drugs have side effects, and some will disrupt your sleep. Also, if you need the occasional sleep aid, I recommend that you go the natural route with melatonin, valerian, chamomile tea, or something similar, instead of a drug.  Drugs for sleep will often give hangovers, or provide a tired, sluggish feeling the next day that may make work, or school more difficult.

Drugs can also be habit forming or addictive, and may make you dependent on them. If you need a drug every night to help you sleep, there is an underlying issue that should be addressed. It could be a digestive, gallbladder problem, or stress, or anxiety related.

Other insomnia causes may take more time and effort to eliminate. Pain, and inflammation, for instance may require a regimen to provide relief.  Always better to look for and attempt to eliminate the cause of an issue than to just treat the symptom.

Treating symptoms may give you temporary relief, but if you don’t find, and eliminate the cause, it is only a matter of time before your symptoms come back, and possibly worse than before.

 

 

Best Ways to Treat and Help Eliminate Insomnia

Earthing  Earthing or grounding is described as connecting the electrical flows of the body with the electrical flows of the earth. This is achieved by merely walking on the earth barefoot, or can be accomplished inside your home by using a grounding pad for the bed, or for the floor.

This technique has been shown to help alleviate sleep issues, as well as many other health concerns.

Gallbladder Detox and/or Flush  The gallbladder can be at the core of many sleep problems. Due to our unhealthy diets of processed, refined, and fried foods, the gallbladder can become jammed, and as a result, effect our ability to sleep.

A good gallbladder flush, or a detox may provide much needed improvement in sleep, mood, and energy.

Once you establish an earthing program, and detox, and flush the gallbladder, if needed, I believe you will also eliminate or at least minimize the intensity of the pain/inflammation, and any stress or anxiety that may be related to your insomnia.

Liver Detox I would also recommend a liver detox program. The most effective way to detoxify the liver is with a coffee enema. Coffee enemas should be undertaken at least twice a week for 12 to 13 weeks. Use a good organic coffee, and an anti infective herb. Turmeric is also beneficial for the liver as a detoxifier, and can help with pain and inflammation.

Especially for women that are pre menopausal, or menopausal, a liver detox is important to rebalance the hormones.

This process does not use heat to diffuse the oils. Heating the oil can damage or compromise it’s beneficial properties.  Because you smell and breathe these oils, you want to utilize oils that have pleasant aromas.

Some of the more popular essential oils used for diffusing are lemon, pepperment, lavender, cinnamon, frankincense, and eucalyptus. 30 to 45 minutes is normally sufficient diffusing time for you to reap benefits, and will help conserve the oil.

Topical  Topical application is the process of simply applying the oils directly on to the skin. This allows the essential oil to be absorbed through the skin, and into the blood stream.

Due to the fact that these oils are fat soluble, they can be absorbed easily through the skin. However, due to the inherent strength of essential oils, they should be diluted prior to being applied topically.

Dilution of essential oils is accomplished with the use of carrier oils, not water. Generally speaking these carrier oils are used in a high ratio compared to the essential oil. Refer to usage information for the correct ratios of carrier oils to essential oils.

Some of the more common carrier oils are: coconut, grape seed, almond, avacado, and sunflower.

Steaming

It is easy to utilize the benefits of essential oils by steaming. Start by heating filtered water on the stove until it begins to steam. Although not recommended, you can also fill a large cup or mug with filtered water and heat it in the microwave for 2 or 3 minutes.

Be very careful not to microwave the water for longer than this. It is safer to heat the water on the stove.

Pour the water into a large cup or bowl, and put a few drops of your choice of essential oil into the water. This is very potent. Close your eyes, or wear glasses to protect your eyes. Move your face over the cup or bowl, and breathe in through your mouth and nose.

You should immediately feel the results through your nasal passages, and through your mouth and lungs. This is a good, quick way to feel the effects from the essential oils.

Inhaling  The simplest, and easiest way to feel the effects of essential oils is to just open the bottle, and smell the contents.

It is also useful to open a bottle and place it in a bathroom, or anywhere else you would like to enjoy the scent of an essential oil without having to deal with a diffuser, or steaming the oils.

Diffusing is optimum, but this method can give you that quick pick me up to make you feel better.

Ingesting  (This method should only be attempted by or with guidance of a Certified Aromatherapist.) Caution should be used when considering ingesting essential oils. Ingesting essential oils is an effective delivery method for some oils. It is also not a good idea for other essential oils. Most, if not all essential oils should only be ingested when mixed with a carrier oil.

Some oils can also be ingested by putting a few drops in a cup or glass of water and drank. Essential oils should never be given orally to children. Never let a child ingest essential oils.

Frankincense, and lemon, because they are gentle, can normally be ingested under the tongue. Other oils are more caustic, and can cause problems if ingested, or not ingested properly.

Therapeutic grade essential oil that is organic, pure and free of toxins and additives, and is also undiluted and unfiltered is best for this method.

When I first broached the idea of dating online back in the late 90’s, there were only a handful of actual dating sites. I don’t recall if I stumbled upon it while online, or if a friend or coworker first told me about it. What I do remember is that I was hooked immediately.

I had to see how this new phenomenon worked, and if it was for real. Could it be true that I no longer had to summon courage to approach a woman in a bar? Was it possible that I no longer had to depend on friends or family members to set me up on dates with their friends?

Could I really look at several, if not dozens of different profiles with pictures of different women, and choose the ones that I am most attracted to, lived close by, and had the most in common with before contacting them?

Today, 2018, there are dozens of dating sites. I have not counted them all, but I would guess the number approaches several hundred different sites.

Many of these dating sites are short lived, as the competition for members has steadily increased over the last 10 years of so, and continues to increase as we speak.

There is attrition of the pay sites, and also of the free ones, as many people will let their memberships lapse once they are in a steady relationship.  The good news for many of these sites however is that a lot of people belong to more than one, and some belong to many sites.

There are still a few general dating sites, but most dating sites now are ‘niche’ dating sites. The different dating sites include free sites, pay sites, Christian sites, Jewish sites, adult sites, gay sites, senior sites, ethnic sites, activities sites, sugar daddy/sugar momma sites, hookup sites, speed dating sites, and many more.

Almost any group or desire is covered in the online dating site world. Some sites are free. Some are free for certain periods like 7 days, and then require that you become a paid member to continue.

Others allow you to stay a member for free but they limit your access, and your ability to communicate with other members.

Most sites will allow you to begin for free, and at least let you look around, and see what the site is about, what the members look like, how much choice and variety there is, and what the site’s special features are. You can usually obtain a discount on the monthly membership rates by buying an extended membership. These extended memberships are normally for 3,6, and 12 months. The longer the extension you agree to, the lower the monthly rate.

My experience has been that you usually get what you pay for. With the free sites, you have to sift through a lot of sand to get to the gold.

The members of the free sites, generally speaking, are not as sincere as the members of the paid sites.  By sincere I mean that they are looking for a more serious, long term relationship.

The member profiles on the paid sites are also more thorough, and well written than the free sites. The member’s pictures are also better, as there is a feeling of putting your best foot forward there.

The free sites tend to attract everyone, so you find more people that are less successful, and many have different views, and objectives on life than those on the pay sites. This of course is a generalization, but it has been my experience.

What to put in your Dating Profile

Much of this ‘advice’ is applicable to both men and women, but since I am a guy, it is from a  guy’s perspective.

The most important consideration in filling out your dating profile is to be sincere, and honest. You can’t be all things to all people, and remember, you are trying to find someone that you connect with.

For example, if you are a smoker, you probably won’t get along well with a non-smoker.  I won’t date smokers, but I’m sure there are a lot of smokers that wouldn’t date the likes of me because I don’t smoke. And, so be it.

If you are 5 feet 8 inches tall, don’t put in your profile that you are 6 feet tall.  If you are considerably overweight, don’t put that you are of average build, or even a few extra pounds overweight.

The truth will come out when you meet someone, and if you have misrepresented yourself, you will disappoint the person you are meeting.

They may also think that if you lie about your height or weight that you may also lie about other things.  Your odds of getting a second date go way down.

You don’t have to write a novel about yourself, and your likes and dislikes. In fact, I highly recommend that you don’t get too wordy. Just hit the main points, and you can add a little extra. After all, you want to discover some things about your date when you meet, and have more to talk about.

When I see a profile that goes on and on, it makes me think that this person is self absorbed, and may have a tendency to want to talk your ear off.  People are busy, and they don’t want to spend an hour or two reading someone’s profile. At least I don’t.

Try to use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Now, I realize that not everyone is proficient in this area. Misspelling the occasional word is ok.

Not having perfect grammar, and punctuation is also ok. But, if it is obvious that you slept your way through school, or that you are dumb as a box of rocks, you will also likely struggle to attract prospective mates.

There are spelling checks, and grammar checks online that you can use, if need be. The site grammarly.com is a very good one for this purpose.  If you struggle in this area, it might be a good idea to run your writing through these before you hit the submit button on the dating site.

Try to refrain from using vulgarity. It is also a good idea to keep from being too political, and keep from denegrading certain ethnic groups, and countries.

You may be 100% in the right, and justified in what you say, but also remember that many people could disagree, or take your comments in the wrong light, and that could shrink your pool of possible prospects.

I’m not saying that if it’s important to you that you should not include it. Just saying that you should consider how your remarks will be taken.

Another statement that I come across quite a bit from the ladies that have kids, is “my kids always come first”.  This may be true, and I can respect that.

However, if you are looking for a relationship, and you immediately make a guy feel that he is going to be relatively unimportant to you, it will lessen the interest that you will generate.

I think most guys understand that your kids always come first, and you would be less of a mom if you didn’t feel that way. However, you would be better off saying something like, my time may be limited because I have younger kids, but I will try my best to make time for a man that I like.

Putting your picture on your profile is an absolute must. Profiles with pictures, even not so great pictures, get tons more responses than those profiles that don’t have a picture.

The types of pictures you put on your profile may be the single most important thing you include on your online dating profile.

Do not put pictures on your profile that are more than 2-3 years old. I have met a few ladies that looked so much older than their pictures, that I didn’t even recognize them when I met them.

Needless to say, I didn’t want to pursue a relationship with them. In this day and age with cell phone cameras, there is no excuse not to have a recent photo of yourself to post.

I also strongly suggest not to post pictures on dating sites that are too revealing. Unless you are posting to a hook up site, I would try to keep it clean, and civilized.

I have spoken to many women that say if they see a picture of a guy with his shirt off on his profile, they won’t communicate with them.  There are exceptions, like if you are at a pool or on the beach, but generally speaking I would error on the conservative side.

The same thing goes for the females. Although it is enticing to look at, too much exposure only makes you look cheap, and desperate. If you present yourself this way, you will also attract a lower class individual. I like to leave something to the imagination, at least when long term relationships are being considered.

I am more interested in a woman that keeps things respectable, at least until we get to know each other. Don’t get me wrong. I am not the morality police. You can do what you want, of course, but just remember that your actions have consequences.

It is also a good idea from a guy’s perspective, for a woman to have only herself in her main picture. If you want to include your kids, and others in your secondary pictures, I think that is fine.

If your main picture is of you holding a baby, I can tell you that most guys will be turned off, and it will dramatically lower your incoming messages.

We know that you love your children, and family, but remember this is a dating site. We want to learn about, and look at you. We are not concerned about your family and friends right off the bat. We may like to know how many kids you have, their ages, and whether or not they live with you, but I would low key the pictures of them, at least initially.

If you are not sure if which pictures you should post on your dating site, I suggest you show your pictures to a friend of the opposite sex. Obviously, you want your best picture to be your main picture. Picking the right one can make all the difference.

Dating sites always show your main picture on the search results. I have seen main pictures that were not good, and secondary pictures that were good.

Let’s be honest, most people want at least some attraction. If you main picture is not your best picture, you could easily lose prospects.

How to Correspond

On the online dating sites today, there is often competition. So many people are using online dating that in order to be successful, you have do things correctly. This can mean that you have to stand out.

Assuming that you have a good, readable profile with good, recent pictures, it is time to search for your possible dates. Most sites will allow you to input the exact criteria of the type of person you are looking for in the search page.  If you get too specific in your search, you will decrease the results.

Determine what you must have in a potential mate, and leave neutral those attributes that you can live without. Once you have found a few good matches, it’s time to start communicating.

The first email that you send is very important. The feedback that I have from the gals is they want guys to write more than a few words.

They want to know that you read their profile, and that there is something in there that has piqued your interest. You don’t have to write much, but what works for me is to be polite, respectful, and to always ask a question about something in the profile.

For instance, if they say they like to play golf, you can ask if they played golf in high school.  Or, if they say they like seafood, you can ask what their favorite seafood restaurant is.  It is a good idea to not get too personal right away, and don’t ask things like, where in town do you live?

Whatever you do, don’t comment on, or ask anything that could be construed as sexual.  This may sound obvious, but I have been told that many guys get very personal right away, and it is a big red flag, and a turn off.

The point is, don’t come off like a creep or a pervert. This will get you nowhere.  Just be nice, act interested, and be patient. If you come from just trying to make a friend, you will have a better chance of getting a positive, return message.

For the ladies, I think it is ok for you to contact a man on a dating site that you are interested in. It is very flattering for a man to receive a message from an attractive lady.

Normally, you will need to message back and forth at least a few times before you will be able to ask for a meeting. The usual progression is, 3 to 4 emails, then ask for a phone number.

Once you have the phone number, talk on the phone a few times. Then, once you sense that you have a rapport going on, ask for a meeting/date

Some gals don’t need to talk on the phone first, but most do. Being patient is key here.

The first date or meeting, I think should be a short one. I have learned over the years that seeing someone in person can be very different from what you expect. It is better to meet for a drink or a cup of coffee, than to plan on meeting for dinner, and making a night of it. I call this the meet and greet.

You can usually tell fairly quickly, sometimes immediately, if this person is someone that you would like to continue seeing. By arranging for a short first meeting, you can often save each other time and money.

If you do hit it off, and are attracted to your new friend, you can set up a dinner date, or some other longer meet up. I also like to make the first date a walk in a park, or a walk on a high school track.

It is easy to converse, and you can get a little exercise at the same time. If you hit it off, you can set something up for another time.

If not, nothing lost, and you may have gained a new friend.  Your only loss will be your time at worst.

This strategy will also protect you from what I call the serial dinner daters. These are women that agree to meet for dinner with whomever is willing to take them, and pay for them.

They are often not looking for a relationship, they just like to go out to eat, and they really like that they don’t have to pay.

This brings up another aspect of online dating, and just dating in general. Should the man pay? Should both pay?

Interestingly, this social more was established years ago when the vast majority of women didn’t work and earn money. The man predominantly earned money, so it was required of him to pay whenever he dated a woman.

Today, things are very different. Many women earn more money than men. Sometimes they earn a lot more. My experience though is that many women, despite the fact that they earn as much or more than a man, still expect the man to pay.

My feeling is that all else being equal, this expense should be shared equally. After all, if you expect the same rights and priveledges, you should then also accept the same responsibilities.

I normally end up paying, but I like for my date to at least offer to help to pay once in a while. If they don’t, it will be noted as a negative, and may be cause to stop seeing that person.

At this point I could give advice on how to proceed with the relationship or not proceed. Each person is different. Each situation is different. People have different objectives.

One thing I can say with certainty though is that it is important to be polite, and considerate. If you set something up and you can’t make it, let that person know as soon as possible.

Be nice. The old saying, you will catch more flies with honey than with vinegar really holds true in the dating/relationship world.

If you are friendly, patient, and act like a gentleman ( you know, not a creep ), you will have a much better chance of your new friend sticking around, and it may not be long before your new relationship will escalate.

So, put the cell phone in your pocket, and if you are in a bar, don’t watch the game on tv. Pay attention to your date. I had to learn this the hard way. lol It is also a good idea not to drink too much, at least not for the first few meetings.

I know that first dates can be nerve racking, and I think having an alcoholic drink or two is ok, but I wouldn’t go beyond that. You don’t want your date to think you have a drinking problem, and you don’t want to come on too strong right away, which alcohol can sometimes encourage.

Remember also that many people on these dating sites know each other. If you gain a reputation as a bad egg, it won’t be long before much of the online dating community will find out about it. If that happens, your dating goose could be cooked.

When filling out your dating profile remember to be honest and sincere. Use good grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Don’t be rude or vulgar. Be sure to include a picture in your profile. Upload recent pictures, ideally not more than a year or two old.

Keep it classy. It is easy to take a picture today because most cell phones have cameras. So if you don’t have a recent pic of yourself, take a selfie already.  Ask a friend of the opposite sex to help you pick out your pictures to maximize your opportunities.

Wondering about best hair loss solutions was not on my radar 15-20 years ago. With me it started with noticing that there was more hair in my hair brush than before.

I then began to notice that my shower drain was not draining properly. When I reached down to check it, I grabbed a pile of hair. Could this be possible? Is this my hair in the drain? Since I lived alone, it must be mine.

If I am finding hair in the drain, and more hair on my brush, I must be losing hair from my head.  I began to examine my hair. It didn’t look noticibly different at first, but I kept finding more and more hair in my brush and more in my shower drain.

Before long I could tell by running my fingers through my hair that it was not as thick as before. I still looked fine, maybe this hair loss will stop somehow, I thought.

Then I remembered that my paternal grandfather was bald. My father was bald. My cousin was bald at 16.  My older brother’s hair was getting thinner every time I saw him.

Does this mean it is genetic? Is there nothing I can do to stop this process, I wondered? I don’t want to go bald. How will the ladies treat me?

Will it affect my business opportunities? Will I have to start wearing a hat everywhere I go? Will I be the butt of my buddies’ jokes? Will it make me look a lot older?

After all, I was only in my early 40’s. I really don’t want to have to buy, and wear a toupee. Nothing looks worse than a guy in an obvious toupee. Obvious to everyone but the guy wearing it.

It is almost comical. And what about the guy with the hair plugs? Have you ever seen bad hair plugs? That guy would be better off with a toupee, or going fully bald.

Now it’s true that there are many worse things that can happen to a person besides losing their hair. But surely there had to be a solution.

What Causes Hair Loss

 

My Naturopathic health education background taught me that if you want to find a permanent solution to a problem, you must first determine the root cause. Pun intended.

Addressing and treating the symptoms of an issue may provide a temporary solution, but it may make the underlying problem or cause worse, and at best the problem will reappear with similar intensity in the not too distant future.

Hairs have a 3 year life cycle. It is normal to lose about 100 hairs per day.

Androgenic Alopecia Hair Loss (Male or Female Pattern Baldness)

There are several causes of Androgenic Alopecia hair loss, but the primary cause is hormone imbalance in both men and women.  The conversion of testosterone, a male hormone, into dihydrotestosterone or DHT.

DHT is made by an enzyme called 5 – alpha reductase. It can also be made from DHEA, dehydroepiandrosterone, a hormone more commonly found in females.

This is the process that not only contributes to hair loss on the head, but also forces more hair to grow out of your nose, and your ears.

Hair loss does not happen as often with women as with men due to the amount of estrogen that women normally produce.  Although women do account for about 40% of hair loss cases. This estrogen counteracts the effects of the DHT, and DHEA.

Another major cause of thinning hair and hair loss is stress. Stress can stem from work, family issues, dealing with illness, or any number of other triggers that are either perceived or actual. Stress tells the body, the adrenal glands in particular to release cortisol.

Extended periods of stress can overwork the adrenals causing adrenal fatigue. This can lead to a lower production of hormones like cortisol, as well as testosterone.  Hair loss can be the result, at least partly, of this hormone imbalance.

Being nutritionally deprived can also be a cause of hair loss.  When there are issues with the body such as with pancreatitis where the pancreas stops producing enzymes for the digestion and assimilation of food. less nutrition gets to the cells.

The hair is considered by the body, in it’s wisdom, as a low priority for the limited nutrition available. Thus, what nutrition is left goes to other more critical organs, glands, and tissues of the body, and because of this neglect, hair dies, and falls out.

So that we can learn how to prevent a heart attack, we must first learn what exactly a heart attack is. A heart attack is a medical emergency that normally occurs when blood flow to the heart suddenly becomes blocked or significantly reduced. Without this blood flow, the heart tissue loses oxygen, and can die.

Although not usual, a heart attack can also be caused by a spasm of the coronary artery. This coronary spasm restricts and reduces blood flow to the heart muscle.

Medical terms for a heart attack are myocardial infarction or MI, acute myocardial infarction, coronary thrombosis, or coronary occlusion.

Heart Attack Symptoms

Heart attack symptoms can include a pain in the chest, arms, neck, or back, shortness of breath, cold sweats, anxiety, lightheadedness, fatigue, and/or abnormal heart beat or rythym.  It is also possible to have no symptoms.

A silent heart attack is a fairly common occurence, as well. It is possible for a person to have a heart attack, and not know it. This is called silent ischemia. Ischemia is defined as lack of oxygen.

It is estimated that a heart attack occurs every 40 seconds in the U.S.

What Causes a Heart Attack

Perhaps the most common cause of a heart attack is a plague buildup in the arteries, also known as artherosclerosis. Blood clots, or a torn blood vessel can also be a cause of heart attacks.

Risk Factors
Within these causes are risk factors that can generate the conditions surrounding the occurence of a heart attack. Some of the more common risk factors are:

Sex: Men have more heart attacks than women, but that is not to say that women are not at risk, they are.

Age: Your heart attack risk is greater if you are over the age of 65.

Race: People of African descent have a higher risk factor for heart attack than other races. This is not to say that other races are not at risk. They are.

Family History/Genetics:  A family history of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, or high blood pressure puts one more at risk. However, this doesn’t mean that it has a genetic cause necessarily.

Many family habits, lifestyle, and traits can be passed down from generation to generation.  The Human Genome project determined that less than 1/2 of 1 percent of all diseases have a genetic cause at it’s core.

Stress: Stress can be caused by many things such as job, family, health, finances, and diet, and is often another major factor in heart attack/disease.

Lack of Exercise: Light to Moderate exercise seems to help fend off heart issues for many people. Little or no exercise can have the opposite effect.

Obesity/Diet: Being overweight, and having a poor diet can make heart issues much more likely.

Smoking: Cigarette smoking is one of the least healthy habits you can force on your body. It can contribute to heart disease and many other health issues.

Drinking Alcohol:  Drinking alcohol to excess is a big risk factor for heart attack. However, it has been shown that light drinking of alcohol, 1 or 2 drinks per day, may lower stress levels, and may actually be factor in preventing heart attacks.

High Blood Pressure: Especially when combined with other risk factors, high blood pressure can be a significant factor in heart attack risk.

Diagnosis

It is difficult to diagnose a heart attack before it happens, but it is very possible to diagnose if someone is a likely candidate for a heart attack. It is, of course also possible to have a heart attack without knowing it.

A doctor will look at medical history of a given patient, do a physical examination, and take blood and other tests, such as a stress test on a treadmill where heart rate, blood pressure, and heart rythym are monitored to determine if there is any clear evidence of damage to the heart.

To further define the evidence of heart disease, a doctor may perform a cardiac catherization where he can view areas that may have blockages. He may also inject dye into the arteries to attempt to locate any blockages or plague buildup that can be seen with an xray.

How to Prevent a Heart Attack

Now that we know the causes, risk factors, and what a doctor looks for to diagnose heart disease, and how dangerous it can be, we need to focus and concentrate on how to prevent a heart attack.

If you have never had a heart attack, had one heart attack, or multiple heart attacks, this information will help you to decrease your chances of having a heart attack in the future.  Of course, ultimately it is up to you to take the information and put it into action.

Prevention of heart attacks, heart disease, and many other health problems is very much within our control. We make decisions every day that will have a profound impact on whether we live long, healthy, fulfilling lives, or whether our existence is mired with sickness, disease, and resulting unhappiness.

It is not just what we do, but also what we don’t do that determines our futures.

What not to do.

 

  • Drinking alcohol to excess is also directly linked to heart attacks, and many other health issues. However, if you can limit your drinking to 1 or 2 drinks per day max, you may contribute to heart attack prevention. Within the alcohol realm, red wine seems to have the most health benefits. And within red wine, organic, dry farm wines, appear to be the optimum to drink.
  • Taking drugs, both legal, and illegal can be dangerous to your heart health. Especially drugs like cocaine, meth amphetamine, and other ‘uppers’ can cause the heart rate to race, and create arrythmias, and other irregularities.
  • Even taking barbiturates or ‘downers’ can cause heart problems when combined with exercise, and other drugs or alcohol. My best advice is to only take prescription drugs when absolutely needed. Illegal drugs, of course, should always be avoided.
  • Eating processed foods, especially foods that contain high levels of saturated fats found in many meats, and other dishes should be shunned. It is also a good idea to stay away from fried foods, fat laden cheeses, sauces, and the like. If you do eat meat, eat leaner cuts of grass fed meat with no hormones or anti biotics added, and limit your portion sizes. Avoid table salt. This super heated salt is stripped of all vitamins and minerals, and can increase blood pressure.
  • Don’t be a couch potato! Laying around the house, whether it is in front of the tv, the computer, cooking fatty foods on the deck, or hanging out in the man cave should not be a too common occurence. Although enjoying yourself is fine, it can also be taken to excess. People that don’t exercise, and seldom take in any fresh air or Vitamin D from the sun are at much higher risk for heart attack.
  • Don’t let the world get you down. It is easy to be negatively affected by the world around us, whether that is your spouse, family, job, the state of the country, depressing news, finances, or any other reason. Not maintaing an even keel, and a sense of Joie de Vivre or joy of life can lead to high stress levels, and even the dreaded heart disease.
  • Don’t work too hard. Many people have stressful occupations, and work long hours. Their entire lives revolve around their work, and they leave little time for anything else. It’s not difficult to figure out that over time, this all work and no play scenario can be a recipe for disaster.  It is commendable to want to do a great job, and be successful, but don’t do it to the detriment of your health.

What You Should Do

There are many things that can be done to prevent heart disease, and heart attacks. Remember that most of it is within your control.

Sleep a minimum of 7 hours each night. It is also very important to have at least 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. This will help with stress, adrenaline production, and immune system regeneration.

Eat a heart healthy diet.  There are many foods you can eat that can help you have a healthy heart.  The main rule of thumb is to eliminate the garbage.

By garbage I mean the processed, refined, fried, chemical laden foods. You should eat whole, organic, fresh, raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, non farm raised fish, fermented foods, and whole grains to the extent possible.

If you eat meat, eat lean, grass fed meat that does not contain added hormones, or anti biotics. Limiting your consumption of

When eating cooked food, steamed, and baked is much preferable to fried.

Beans  The high soluble fiber content in beans, along with heart healthy flavonoids, help reduce cholesterol, and reduce platelet adhesion in the blood, which can reduce risk of strokes, and heart attacks. Pinto beans, and black beans are among many that provide these benefits.

Natto  This fermented soy bean dish from Japan is one of the heart healthiest foods you can eat.  It has been used in Japan for over 1000 years as a remedy for heart and vascular diseases. Natto can break down plague, and can dissolve blod clots. Other heart healthy fermented soy foods are Miso, and Tempeh.

Something about being out among the squirrels, and the deer provides a relaxing, peaceful experience that allows me to forget the hassles, and stresses of work, and life in general, and rejuvenates my mind, body, and spirit.

Your happy place may be a beach, or a park, or perhaps a stream, or a river, or maybe just sitting on your patio or deck off the back of your home. Whatever it is, and whereever it is, take some time to find a place where you can relax, destress, and unwind. And go there often. Your heart will thank you for it.

Exercise

Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to perform long, intense periods of exercise in order to receive an aerobic benefit. In fact, exercise of long duration, and high intensity may even create more health issues than it solves, especially if you are in the over 40 age group. It is now known that just walking 2 or 3 times a week for 20-30 minutes at a time can provide a significant heart, and overall health benefit, and may be more beneficial than many other types of exercise.

People that walk regularly have less incidence of osteoporosis, depression, anxiety, stress, stroke, and heart disease than those that don’t exercise.

Activities such as yoga, and meditation also have positive effect on heart health.

Be Social

Being socially isolated or lonely can increase a person’s risk for heart disease and strokes according to many recent studies. It was also discovered that those that maintained their social interactions have a much longer life expectancy than those that do not.

Get in Touch with Your Spiritual Side

Many longevity studies have shown that those that attend services, or are involved with religious, and spiritual organizations or communities are less likely to develop heart disease, and their life expectancies are an average of 10 -12 years longer than those that shun spirituality.

Do What You Love for a Living

The old saying goes, if you do what you love for a living, you will never work a day in your life. This is also considered the ‘secret of success’.  Since we spend a great deal of time at work, or at least most of us do, it just makes sense that we should find an occupation that we love. This bit of advice is more appropo for those not yet retired, but it affects the majority of us.

It is common sense that if we enjoy our work, we will be less stressed, feel more satisfied, and probably achieve more in the process.

Put it into Practice

Knowing how to prevent a heart attack is one thing. The other is to actually put it into practice. If you are the type of person that doesn’t like to make abrupt changes in your lifestyle, try a gradual approach.

Healthy soil is the genesis of healthy wine.  Biodynamic, and organic farming allow for, and bring about a healthy soil.  Therefore, healthy vines require a vibrant soil full of beneficial microorganisms, and nutrient dense.

Unfortunately, in the last 50 years, the amount of pesticides sprayed on vines has grown 26 times. Grapes now have the dubious distinction of having some of the highest readings of synthetic pesticides of any farm crop.

Fortunately, organic and biodynamic farmers support the natural nutrient life in their farms, as well as the life in the soil itself. They use natural fertilizers like compost, compost teas, green manure, and cover crops.

They never use synthetic fertilizers. They use mechanical weeding instead of herbicides. They have livestock and grazing chickens to replace toxic insecticides.

Organic farms produce fruit as nature intended. These are the grapes you want for your wines.

  • No Sugar

As you probably already know, sugar, especially refined sugar is highly detrimental to your health.  In fact, refined sugar is one of the least healthy substances on earth to put into your body.

Most U.S. wines are high in sugars. Some of this sugar content can be from added sugar. The other sugars are left behind from a shortened fermentation process.

Natural/organic wines allow all of the naturally occurring sugars to convert to alcohol when the wine ferments fully.  When no sugar is added and all the residual sugar is allowed to ferment, you have a sugar free wine.

  • No Additives  

Wine is not rocket science. It is simply fermented grapes. That’s all.  Grapes that are grown from an organic, natural healthy vineyard already consist of all they require to become wine.

But the process for today’s wine making is much more complex. There’s a lot of disruption, and corruption during the wine making growth stages.

The American FDA has given the green light to 76 additives for use in making wines.  38 of those 76 additives are considered GRAS, or Generally Regarded As Safe.

This begs the question, why were the other 38 additives that did not make the GRAS list approved, and allowed to be added to wines?

Additives can be used to change flavors, add coloring, increase sweetness, and a great deal  more.

  • Lower Alcohol

    Alcohol by itself is toxic. The less consumed of it, the better.

It is no secret. Alcohol is toxic. Alcohol, like sugar, and red meat all feed cancer. It doesn’t necessarily cause cancer, yet it can certainly make it worse.  The more we can limit our intake of alcohol, the healthier we will be.

It’s well known and proven that excessive amounts of alcohol negatively affect your bodily functions and brain development. And don’t we all know how rough those hangovers and headaches feel after a night of too many alcoholic drinks!

This is why it’s so important to begin with less alcohol. Lower alcohol wines permit you to enjoy all the benefits and good taste of wine throughout the entire evening without being exposed to the negative aspects.

  • Laboratory Tested

The only requirement to be on a bottle of wine is the alcohol content. And even the alcohol content doesn’t need to be exact. It can vary as much as 1.5% as what is on the bottle.

The only way to find out what all is in a wine is to have it lab tested.  In addition to the alcohol content in a wine, a lab can test for all ingredients, including the 76 additives that the FDA approved.

Herbs have many health benefits, and some also aid in weight, and fat loss.

Diet is the key to good health, and successful weight and fat loss. Herbs weight loss is attained with a few changes in diet.

Learning how to destress is vital to your quality of life.

Chances are, if you have lived in this world for any length of time, you have encountered stress. Chances are also good that you are already aware of some methods of how to destress in your life, and possibly even currently using some of these methods in your daily life.

What is stress?  Stress has been defined as an emotional or mental state, or feeling of pressure or strain caused by negative, or very challenging circumstances, or perceived negative or challenging circumstances.

Stress is your body/mind’s way of reacting to any type of stressor, or anything that causes stress.  Typical stressors are work/job, family obligations, social situations, driving in traffic, financial needs, or health issues.

Stress can cause high blood pressure, anxiety, weight gain/obesity, digestive issues, skin problems like eczema, hair loss, sleep loss, and if untreated for long periods, stress can lead to more serious chronic illnesses like heart disease, and even cancer.

Drinking Alcohol and how to destress

Many people, in an effort to deal with or alleviate the stress they feel, turn to alcohol, and other drugs, including both over the counter, prescription, and illegal drugs such as marijuana ( legal in some states ), cocaine, methamphetamine, and/or heroin.

Alcohol in excess can deplete the body of needed B vitamins, as well as other vitamins, and minerals. Turning to alcohol to combat stress is usually very counterproductive.

However, it has been shown that if you can limit your alcohol intake to 1 to 2 moderate drinks per day, it can have a beneficial destressing  result, at least temporarily.

Stress has negative effects on the bodies organs, and systems.  It depletes B vitamins, affects liver function, adrenal function, and pancreatic function.

B vitamins, which are made in the small intestine, and the adrenal glands are involved with energy.  We make adrenaline when we sleep, and if we do not get 5 straight hours of uninterrupted sleep at night, we make less than 30% of the amount of adrenaline we need during the day to give us the energy we need to function adequately.

Experts agree that we need 7 to 8 total hours of sleep a night in order to allow our bodies to regenerate it’s stores for the immune system.

Drinking caffeinated coffee can flog the adrenals, put a load on the kidneys, deplete B vitamins, negatively affect sleep, create a carcinogenic atmosphere in the body, and, as a result, contribute to added feelings of stress.

Refined sugar is also a definite no no when it comes to helping stress. It is well documented that refined sugar is detrimental to your mood, and overall mental health.  It is one of the worst so called foods to put in your body, causing a never ending list of health problems.

Some grains, such as wheat, barley, and rye can create mood problems, and can even cause severe depression, and other brain, and mental issues. It is thought that the gluten content in these grains is to blame.

Processed foods ( I hesitate to call them foods as they have removed all or virtually all of any nutrient value they originally contained ) are notorious for creating many health issues, not the least of which are moodiness, and irritability. A better defintion of processed foods, is dead foods.

Most processed foods, which come in a can, bottle, box, or bag will do you more harm than good in almost every case, and should not be eaten, if at all possible.

Fermented Foods  

Fermented foods are foods in which natural bacteria feed on the starch, and sugar within the food, and in turn makes lactic acid.  This process is called lactofermentation.

Dark, leafy, green veggies contain high levels of folate, which has been shown to help the body produce serotonin, and dopamine, the mood regulators, and thus fend off depression, and elevate mood.

What you may have heard about nuts is true. They contain many nutrients that are beneficial to our health.  Two different nuts are particularly useful in stress reduction. They are walnuts, and cashews.

Walnuts are shaped like a brain. Coincidence? I think not.  Pardon the pun.  They contain folate, tryptophan, and melatonin, and can increase seratonin levels in the brain.  These processes help reduce stress, and can produce feelings of well being, and relaxation.

Cashews  are a great source of the mineral zinc.   Higher levels of zinc have been shown to alleviate anxiety, and depression.  They also contain B vitamins, Omega 3 fatty acids, and tryptophan, which combine to  decrease stress.

In addition to the various foods that help alleviate stress, there are many herbs that can contribute to the battle to combat stress.  The  best known stress fighting herbs are:

Lavender is an age old secret for inducing sleep in infants.  Drinking the infused tea is another method of producing it’s destressing properties.

Using foods and herbs to help you deal with our stressful world, is an easy, and positive step. It is however, only part of the destress equation.  You should also include moderate exercise, meditation, massage, time away from work, communing with nature, and discovering your spiritual side, in your stress fighting arsenal.

In learning how to destress, take heed to the old adage,” take time to smell the roses”, or in other words, slow down and enjoy life.
